What I love about the 4th of July….first and foremost, I am very patriotic. I served in the Army, wayyyyy back when. It is actually how I met my husband. We were serving in Germany. I love hearing our national anthem played. It brings out such a feeling of pride. Our nations flag, too. Our neighborhood is lined with flags right now. I just love seeing them.
The 4th of July also brings up great memories for me as a child. Being at my granddparents farm. Playing with my cousins. Swimming in Skunk Creek. Just living life to its fullest. My granddparents farm was outside of Creston, Iowa. They had soybeans and corn. Grandpa would often let us straddle the top of the old red tractor (don’t touch that pipe!) and take us out and about with him as he checked on his crops. The cousins would all get together and play Annie, Annie Over at the barn. And of course tear down corn to make forts to protect us during out dirt clod fights. (And pray Grandpa didn’t find out what we’d done!) The mom’s would convene in the kitchen with Grandma helping to cook our “feast”. For it was always a “feast” at grandma’s. Fresh corn, green beans, hot out of the oven bread. Wow! Incredible food!
The 4th now brings up new memories. Aleasa waving her first sparkler and how excited and scared she was. This year will be our first 4th with Trenton and Gabriel. I pray it isn’t our last.
I hope and your family have a wonderful 4th. Please keep in mind those that are serving right now to keep us safe.
